Tour of Canadian Oil Sands Highlights Latest COQA Event
Attendees at the latest Crude Oil Quality Association meeting – a joint conference in Fort McMurray with the Canadian Crude Quality Technical Association – were treated to an outstanding tour of the Canadian oil sands. Thanks to COQA board member and CCQTA President Randy Segato and Suncor Energy, a group of approximately 100 attendees were able to tour the Suncor Base Plant on the Athabasca River.
The remarkable scale of the operations was evident as we were able to view much of the premises, learning about bitumen mining and upgrading done at this massive site. Attendees were able to learn about the history of the oil sands and the equipment used over time in the mining operations (we easily fit our whole group in a retired drag line bucket). We also witnessed the many reclamation projects underway to restore and detoxify tailings ponds.
Future COQA conferences will continue to provide outstanding tours and social events alongside our traditional conference programs. Have a look at our upcoming events!
